The National Knowledge Commission has brought out valuable documents outlining the critical role of higher education. In this context, the role of Open and Distance Learning System (ODL) becomes significant and unique. The experience across the globe substantiates that ODL system is an effective tool for educationally empowering the different sections of society who, for one reason or the other, had missed the formal ‘face-to-face’ education. Strictly in tune with the philosophy of ODL system, Uttarakhand Open University (UOU) was established by an Act of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in 2005 (Act No. 23 of 2005) on 31.10.2005 with the aim of disseminating knowledge and skills through distance learning, using the flexible and innovative methods of education to ensure ‘Independent Learning’.

About the School
The School of Sciences (SoS) was established in 2012. There are five departments in the School viz. Department of Botany, Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics and Department of Zoology. The School offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral programme through its Departments.

About the Department
The department has been continuously taking steps towards teaching, learning and research in Plant Sciences since its inception in 2012. At present, Department is offering a three-year Under Graduate (annual), a two-year Post Graduate (semester) programmes in ODL system and Doctoral programme. The department aims to achieve excellence in research and teaching in different areas of Botany. The department at present has 05 faculty members having expertise in thrust areas of plant sciences in Medicinal Plants, Plant Taxonomy, Phycology, Bryology, Mycology, Plant Pathology and Ecology.
